When will the “virtual data center” be a reality?

The last two weeks have been chock full of major virtualization announcements, including two industry giants throwing their weight behind Xen. In a matter of days, Oracle announced Oracle VM and Sun launched xVM.
First of all, they’re free! Second, Oracle has certified nine of its products for use with Oracle VM, including its database, application server and PeopleSoft, Siebel and Hyperion applications.
Server virtualization is not just for smaller applications where consolidation is the primary goal, but also business critical applications. In the future – and there are many different theories on how long this might take – but every server will be running in a virtual environment. And why not? The hypervisor is built into the operating system and x86 chipsets from Intel/AMD allow for huge processing densities.
Managing virtual and physical resources in a highly availability environment (without complexity) is becoming critical. The focus for organizations is shifting toward data center virtualization (DCV) and operational continuity. Check out how Intel is now positioning it.
DCV is the answer and the path toward the virtual data center. Why wait? DCV lets you go virtual for all applications, including your most mission critical applications.
